Diamond Tenders

South African Diamond Tenders Dates – 2025

The tender diamond process in South Africa is a common method used for selling rough diamonds. It’s a competitive bidding system where buyers place confidential bids on individual stones or parcels. Here’s how it works:

1. Diamond Sourcing & Preparation

  • Diamonds are mined by companies such as De Beers, Petra Diamonds, and smaller independent producers.
  • The rough stones are sorted, categorized, and sometimes grouped into parcels based on size, quality, and characteristics.

2. Tender Viewing Process

  • The diamonds are displayed at tender houses such as:
    • First Element (Johannesburg & Antwerp)
    • Trans Atlantic Gem Sales (TAGS)
    • Bonas Group
    • Koin International
  • Registered buyers (diamond traders, manufacturers, and dealers) schedule viewing appointments to inspect the goods.
  • The process is strictly controlled, with security measures in place.

3. Bidding Process

  • Each buyer submits sealed bids for the stones they want to purchase.
  • The highest bid for each stone or parcel wins.
  • Since it’s a blind auction, bidders don’t know how much others are offering.

4. Winning & Payment

  • The highest bidder is notified and must pay within a set timeframe (often a few days).
  • Once payment is confirmed, the diamonds are released to the buyer.

5. Cutting, Polishing, or Resale

  • Buyers may cut and polish the diamonds themselves or resell them to international markets (such as Antwerp, Dubai, or India).

Why is the Tender System Used?

  • Transparency: Fair competition among buyers.
  • Market-Driven Prices: No fixed price—values are determined by demand.
  • Access for Multiple Buyers: Unlike direct sales, tenders allow various buyers to compete.
