Hello, I’m Xanchia—Welcome to Your Diamond Journey
If you’ve ever dreamed of working with diamonds—not just admiring them, but truly understanding them, evaluating their worth, and building a business around them—you’re in the right place.
I grew up in this industry. My mom, Corlia Roberts, has been educating and empowering people in the diamond world since 1998. Today, I’m proud to continue that legacy by helping others—just like you—take their first steps toward becoming licensed diamond dealers.
Whether you’re starting from scratch or looking to add diamonds to your existing business, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know.
What Does a Diamond Dealer Actually Do?
When people hear “diamond dealer,” they often imagine luxury and high-end sales. But behind the sparkle is real expertise. A diamond dealer needs to understand:
- The value of rough and polished diamonds
- How to source ethically and legally
- How to build trust and long-term relationships in the trade
It’s not just about selling—it’s about knowing.
Dealers are responsible for sourcing, evaluating, buying, and selling rough or polished diamonds, often working closely with miners, cutters, and retailers.
Key skills needed:
- Diamond grading and evaluation
- Negotiation and sales
- Industry compliance and ethics
Start with Education (That’s Where I Come In!)
Education is your foundation. It’s how you learn to see what others can’t—the hidden value in a stone.
That’s why I created the Rough Diamond Evaluation Online Course. It’s completely self-paced and packed with everything you need to understand rough diamonds, from identification to pricing. Plus, you’ll earn an internationally recognized certificate when you’re done.
If you’re not sure which course fits your goals, just message me on WhatsApp—I’ll help you choose.
Get Legal: Your Diamond Dealer License
If you’re based in South Africa, you’ll need a Diamond Dealer License from the South African Diamond and Precious Metals Regulator (SADPMR).
Here’s what you’ll typically need:
- Certified Copy of ID
- Certified Copy of Business Plan
- Certified Copy & Original Police Clearance Certificate (SAPS 365)
- Proof of Business Address (Municipal Bill or Lease Agreement)
- Proof of Funds (3-Month Bank Statements)
- Proof of Tax Clearance Certificate (SARS)
- Form DD Application Form
- Proof of Technical Ability (Certificate in Rough Diamond Evaluation)
- License fee R5000 (SADPMR fee)
I assist many of my students with their license applications—it can be overwhelming, but you don’t have to do it alone.
Build Industry Connections (Start Early)
Relationships are everything in this business. Some of my closest friends and mentors were met at diamond auctions, trade shows, and through student communities.
Start by connecting with:
- Reputable suppliers
- Fellow students and dealers
- Auction platforms
- Ethical sourcing networks
You’ll learn just as much from conversations as you will from courses.
Where Will You Get Your Diamonds?
In the beginning, you don’t need to own a vault of diamonds. Many of my students start by brokering stones—connecting buyers and sellers—before investing in their own stock.
Launch Your Business
Your business model can be as flexible as your vision. You could:
- Wholesale to jewellers
- Sell investment diamonds to collectors
- Source and trade rare stones
- Private broker
Some of my students even build online platforms or boutique-style social media shops. Your brand should reflect you.
Keep Learning, Always
This industry is full of change—new sources, shifting regulations, and evolving customer preferences.
I’m always learning too. That’s why I keep updating my courses and offering support, even after you’ve finished the program. Becoming a diamond dealer isn’t just a career move—it’s a lifestyle shift. One that brings independence, purpose, and if you’re like me, a deep love for the earth’s most extraordinary creation.
